boyhood on the farm charles was the oldest son and had many responsibilities around the farm but it was always understood that he would go onto university and not return to farm. paul encouraged this in all of his children, partly from his own desire to get off the farm. even though he wanted his children to have the opportunities of life off the farm he taught charles a great deal about farming and hunting and charlie was an extremely responsible young lad.
